Traditional Native Instruments
Gourd Rattles
| Our Native people use these Gourd Rattles in their ceremonies to imitate the sound of the wind, for relaxation, meditation and healing. | Rainsticks
| We use Rainsticks in our music to produce the sound of rain or running water. Our Rainsticks are also used to relieve pain and headaches. | Pan Flutes
| Pan Flutes originated from the Inca Indians in South America. All of the Native people use them in their ceremonies. The sound of the Pan Flute is very soothing, relaxing and they are played for healing. It has been said that this music can “even sooth the savage beast.” | Peace Flutes
| This flute is used in North and South America for special occasions in the opening ceremonies. Before the ceremony, as the people gather, this flute is played first, followed by other flutes and drums. The Peace Flute has a very haunting sound and is used by Shaman or Kokopelli for healing. | Drums
| Drums are used in our Native music to make the sound of a heartbeat from our Mother Earth. Our drums are handmade from hollowed cottonwood trunks and deer or elk hide for the heads. | Cedar Flutes
| This flute is played to court a young maiden. For example, a maiden may be next to a river, washing items and the flute player will hide in the foliage, playing his Cedar Flute. If the maiden likes the music, she will turn toward the music; they will meet, and perhaps fall in love. If she doesn’t like the music, she will finish her chores and leave the area without recognition. | Quenas
| This flute is a symbol of power. Inca Indians used this flute (similar to the bugle in our military) to lead into battle. In ceremonies, this flute has a strong sound and represents Pride, and makes the heart stronger, like Braveheart. | Tarkas
| These flutes are traditional Inca flutes used in special occasions like Inti Rami. This festival is celebrated every June. People gather from all four corners, North, South, East, and West to tell their leaders about their harvests, victories and losses. Then the leaders send the appropriate resources to balance the needs of the people. |
